How do I get certified to bartend in South Carolina?
South Carolina requires bartenders and alcohol servers to obtain an Alcohol Beverage Licensing (ABL) server certificate.
To work legally, you’ll need to complete a state-approved responsible alcohol server training program and obtain certification through the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR).
Here’s how to get started:
- Enroll in a South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR)-approved online course
- Successfully complete the proctored final exam
- Download your certificate of completion—you’ll need your certificate ID and name to access your official SCDOR certificate
- After 7–10 days, visit MyDORWAY to retrieve your state-issued certificate (no account required)
- Enter your ABL Server Certification ID and your name
- Select “Search” to locate your certificate
- Save and print your certificate for your records
Alcohol servers must keep a digital or printed copy while working, and employers or license holders are required to maintain a copy for each employee.
Who needs to complete mandatory H.3430 training in South Carolina?
In South Carolina, mandatory H.3430 alcohol server training applies to:
- Alcohol servers who work at least 10 hours per week serving alcohol for on-premises consumption (e.g., bars, restaurants, hotels)
- Managers and supervisors who oversee alcohol service in those establishments
Timing requirements:
- Current employees: Must be certified by May 1, 2026
- New hires: Must complete training within 30 days of employment
Where this applies:
- Any on-premises establishment that serves alcohol, including:
- Bars
- Restaurants
- Hotels
- Event venues
If these requirements aren’t met, businesses can face fines of $500 per uncertified employee per inspection.
How long is alcohol server certification valid?
In South Carolina, alcohol server certification is valid for three (3) years from the date it is issued. Once it expires, you’ll need to renew or complete a new training program to stay compliant with state regulations set by the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
All bars, restaurants, hotels, and other on-premise establishments must employ certified staff by the required deadline or risk fines of $500 per uncertified server during inspections.
To avoid penalties, servers and managers should track their certification expiration dates and complete renewal before it lapses. Employers may also require current certification as part of their internal compliance policies.
